The Culture of Crazy, part eleventy-billion and one [Sep. 23rd, 2009|09:37 am]

Japan, well know for miniaturization of electronics, shows that they also can cram immense amounts of WTF into one single ad.

Dr. Horrible takes over the Emmys!

It pays to know your audience [Sep. 17th, 2009|08:56 am]

Quick question: what are the staples of role-playing? If you answered, "Pizza and soft drinks", take 10 points for your house. With that in mind, bear witness to the awesomeness that is Jones Soda's Dungeons & Dragons Limited Edition Spellcasting Soda! You just have to love something called "Bigby's Crushing Thirst Destroyer"....

And, in the end.... [Sep. 16th, 2009|04:57 pm]

If I had to describe the intro to "The Beatles: RockBand" in one word, it would be, "Stunning." If I had to do that for the outro, it would be, "Perfect."

Now they've gone TOO FAR!!!! [Sep. 14th, 2009|05:13 pm]
[Current Mood | angry]

I might as well warn you now - there's probably gonna be some grumpy grownup words in the cut....

First, the headline:

Disney taps Robert Zemeckis to remake Yellow Submarine in performance-capture 3D.

Now, the response: Grumpiness behind cut )
This is the final straw. I really don't see how I can justify going to see a movie in a theater if the money I spend there is going to go to crap like this. I'm even contemplating going to all-used DVDs, just to make sure they don't get my money by accident.

How do you do this, Japan? How can you be making a fantastic looking sequel to the "Space Cruiser Yamato" series, whilst and at the same time be making a television show about a 10,000-year-old girl who fights evil with her magical boobs? HOW?!? This kind of thing makes me never want to buy a Japanese-made car, for fear of what I may accidentally find in it or what it might do if I press the wrong sequence of controls. I'm gonna go lie down after I renounce, exorcise and unplug all of my Sony gear....

One false step? [Jul. 26th, 2009|07:27 pm]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]

I had meant to post this on the 20th, but I got sidetracked by real life. That'll happen. We all know about the success of the Apollo 11 landing (or the success of Hollywood, depending on your tin-foil hat quotient), but while it was happening, success was not guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination. While the world was riveted to their televisions watching history unfold, Richard Nixon and the White House were preparing for the unthinkable - the possibility that Armstrong and Aldrin might die on the surface of the moon. Here is the text of a speech prepared, but thankfully never delivered, for that terrible scenario. We take space exploration mostly for granted, except when something like Challenger or Columbia reminds us of how dangerous it really is, but I truly cannot imagine the terrific burden of powerlessly watching something like that playing out, knowing that at any moment I might be called upon to deliver their eulogy to the world....

... and this movie is nowhere near it. It's happily occupying a split-level ranch house on the 'crazy' side, and dreams of starting a family and opening up a boutique. I give to you RoboGeisha (NSFW). And no, I didn't keep the receipt, so you can't exchange it. And I'll be very upset if I find out you've re-gifted it.

Love, like, dislike, or loathe them, the opening cinematic to the upcoming Beatles-themed iteration of the Rockband series is jaw-droppingly beautiful.

What to wear.... [May. 26th, 2009|11:59 am]
[Current Mood | geeky]

You say you like movies? You say you like t-shirts? You say you've had it up to HERE with t-shirts that are just the name of a movie stenciled on a piece of cotton/polyester blend? Well, have I got a site for you! Head over to Last Exit to Nowhere. Instead of just becoming another walking billboard for the movie, Last Exit t-shirts allow you to become a walking billboard for the stuff IN the movie, like Omni Consumer Products, Weyland-Yutani, or the HAL plant in Urbana, Illinois. They have t-shirts for everything from Back to the Future and Blade Runner to Shaun of the Dead and An American Werewolf in London to Convoy and A Clockwork Orange. Go give 'em the once-over!

(Be forewarned, they're in the UK, so the exchange rate may be a bit dear for some)

Whoopsie.... [Apr. 22nd, 2009|09:20 pm]
[Current Mood | silly]

While at the going-away shindig for [info]humidcityloki (hope the move went OK for you guys, by the way), I realized I had been remiss in not sharing one of my great joys of the past few months. So, to rectify the situation, I present to you Zero Punctuation, the brilliant yet demented rantings of one Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw. Armed with only a headset mike, a simple animation program, and a rapid-fire British-accented delivery, Yahtzee delivers a scathing review of a new video game every Wednesday. Now, I know you're probably saying, "But I have little to no interest in video games - why would I watch this?" Because it's damned FUNNY, that's why. His frantic pace, his sarcastic wit, and his clever-by-a-half visuals make this a must-see even is you've never been into video games or, like me, let go of them after the 16-bit days. His console rundown is a good place to start, and his takedown of Sonic Unleashed is him at his bile-slinging best. BE WARNED, his language is VERY NSFW, and he does tend to print out the rude words in his animations. Watch out for the imp!

Ladies... a little help? [Apr. 15th, 2009|09:37 pm]
[Current Mood | confused]

For one of the few times in my life, I've seen something I don't know how to react to. I laughed, yes, but my confusion is monumental right about now. There's a part of my brain saying I should be outraged, but for the life of me I can't manage it. This is one of the most... WRONG things I've ever seen. I think I'm gonna lie down....

P.S.: Guys, don't feel left out, but make sure that you're prepared for any consequences....

P.P.S.: This is work safe... I think. It'd be safe for my place of work, anyway.

P.P.P.S.: Oh yeah, I'm saving it....

It's hard for me to say.... [Mar. 26th, 2009|09:57 pm]
Communication is not the easiest thing in the world. If you don't believe me, you can simply look at the update history of this LJ for confirmation of this premise. :-) But, when the subject becomes more... shall we say... delicate, even the most loquacious people tend to clam up. However, the fine folks at the The Bureau of Communication have taken it upon themselves to help out all and sundry to 'promote better understanding between the peoples of the world'. Take a look - I'm sure you'll find something useful....

Technically Grimm [Mar. 24th, 2009|08:49 pm]
This is probably the most unique retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood" you'll ever see. At least, it's the only one with obvious product placement and the nutrional breakdown of Grandma. Make sure you enter full-screen mode to get the full effect (it's the 'x' at the end of the control bar opposite of the play/pause button).
